Q & A
Q:  What's the attire?
A:
We're pretty flexible. Current trends range from Casual Friday to Sunday Best. However, no birthday suits, even if it is your big day!

Q:  How can I pay?
A:
Here at Jackson's, we accept major credit cards and cash. We also accept that sometimes you leave your wallet home. In cases such as these, we have lots of dirty dishes.

Q:  Can I bring my kids?
A:
We do not allow: smoking, pets, bare feet. We do allow children, however they will be held responsible for all badly behaving parents.

Q:  What's the deal with reservations?
A:
Generally, Jackson's accepts reservations for  7 or more guests. However, we are unable to accept any reservations during our prime time, which is Friday and Saturday from 6 to 9 pm.

If you're a single gal or 15 people, give us a call before you leave the house to get your name on the list (if there is one, that is). When its real busy, we won't seat you unless your entire party is here, so don't invite late people.

We go here often and the food is usually delicious. There have been misses here and there, but for the most part, if you want decent, casual American cuisine...can't go wrong here

Was visiting my folks in Comack who suggested we eat here for lunch. As a bar-and-grill type place with a vast menu, I can see why this would be a popular local place. I work in the IT Dept for an ecommerce site, CleanItSupply, that sells janitorial and restaurant supplies. I always check out a restaurant's paper products in the bathrooms and any janitorial items that are visiable. I noted that Jackson's needed some new heavy duty mop buckets. The one I glimpse was an older model and looked as if it was due for an upgrade. I decided to mention Jackson's to my boss when I returned to PA and suggest that a salesperson reach out to the restaurant. THe meal with my parents was satisfying. This neighborhood grill with its laid-back ambience puts a creative twist on American fare. NOTE: jump ahead to 2018 and Jackson's is still around. My parents and I still have lunch there whenever I am in town. A reliable place to still get a tasty meal.

Decent style BBQ/Steak style fare, food is fairly pedestrian and simple but not bad by any means. Salads are nice, anything grilled here is typically done well. Portions are large and plated normally. As far as the atmosphere it's pretty nice inside for this type of a location, interesting lighting decor, some brick walls and lots of wood tones. Not a bad spot for a steak or burger if you should be in the area.

Been there for lunch, dinner, weekdays and weekends. Each time was a little different but almost all was great to good. It is dark in there I will tell you. So during the day I felt it was a little bit of a downer but night it is casual but intimate.

This place has become a neighborhood staple for me. Every time I go, I always have a great experience - food is always great, service friendly and drinks made well. I've also taken a bunch of friends/family here and the consensus is usually the same - good american food in a nicer atmosphere w/ pretty good prices. Greatest thing is that if you're on a budget, they have a great 3 course prix-fixe menu for all of $24.95.

This is a wonderful spot especially for the price. It is exactly as advertised, upscale bbq.The flavors and dishes are what you would expect. Ribs are very soft and have a nice tangy taste. Mac & cheese is stellar and suggest those. They have sweet potato fries so right there its worth a try. I have always found the service to be good, and the atmosphere is very nice.  Good for any occasion, and for any group. Go enjoy and you will definitely get full.

I came here to check out the sliders immediately after reading Joan Reminick's silly Newsday article on the recent menu trend of mini-burgers on LI (newsday.com/features/pri…).  Where I come from, Slyders are spelled with a "Y" and have a (TM) next to it.  Regardless, the burgers here weren't bad; ("Roadside Sliders" two mini-burgers and potato-stix fries . . . $6.50).  However, Jackson's is a restaurant/ bar-and-grill type place with a vast menu, not a storefront burger joint, as Reminick's article suggests.  (The sliders are an appetizer and pretty much the cheapest thing on the menu).  This place used to be called the Blue Oyster Grille (no umlauts) and retains the same ownership, (also own Red Fish in Plainview) but aims at being more trendy.  Atmosphere-wise, nothing new or special, HDTVs and satellite-fed tunes. . . The bar has a blue-hued, unappetizing blacklight under it, highlighting your phosphors, so wear clean pants if you bring a girl or plan to meet one. . . A cutie-pie/ androidish barmaid, top-shelf liquors displayed, Samuel Adams Winter (in the new Sam Adams glasses, meant to enhance your sensory experience) and Blue Moon drafts, happy hour and late-night specials ($2.50 drinks and $5 apps).  They had a offer for LI Restaurant Week, which runs through this Sunday.

More Background on Jackson's Restaurant

Jackson's Restaurant has been a beloved fixture in Commack, New York for over a decade, serving up classic American comfort food with a creative twist. This comprehensive look at Jackson's will explore its history, menu offerings, atmosphere, and impact on the local community.

A Brief History

Jackson's opened its doors in the mid-2000s, taking over the space previously occupied by the Blue Oyster Grille. The restaurant was the brainchild of owner Artie Bloom, who along with his daughter Shelby and son-in-law Harry Poole, sought to create a family-friendly neighborhood spot.

Bloom, who has a background in architecture, personally designed and built the restaurant space. This hands-on approach extended to the menu as well, with Bloom drawing inspiration from his previous restaurant ventures like Fat Artie's.

Over the years, Jackson's has expanded its offerings and physical space. In 2010, the restaurant announced plans to add a catering room and full-service party center called "Parties by Jackson's".

Menu Highlights

Jackson's is known for its diverse menu that caters to a wide range of tastes. Some of the standout dishes include:

Appetizers

  • Crispy calamari with various sauce options

  • Buffalo chicken wings

  • Roadside sliders (mini burgers, pulled pork, and Philly cheesesteak options)

Salads

  • Jackson's House Salad with bacon, egg, and spicy house dressing

  • Pear & Gorgonzola Salad with baby spinach and glazed pecans

Entrees

  • Marinated skirt steak with caramelized onions

  • Bourbon Street jambalaya

  • Cedar plank salmon

  • Fall-off-the-bone BBQ ribs

Sandwiches and Burgers

  • Classic Chophouse Burger

  • Greek Salad Wrap

  • Carolina Pulled Pork sandwich

The restaurant also offers a selection of pasta dishes, seafood options, and vegetarian choices.

Craft Cocktails and Beer Selection

While Jackson's initially built a reputation for its extensive craft beer selection, the restaurant has also gained recognition for its innovative cocktail program. Head bartender Tracy Johanna has been instrumental in developing unique drink offerings that complement the food menu.

One standout cocktail is the Mango Express, which won third place at the NY Craft Cocktail Expo Long Island in 2017. This complex drink features mango and jalapeño-infused tequila, mango nectar, smoked honey, and fresh lime juice, garnished with a brûléed mango and jalapeño skewer.

Atmosphere and Decor

Jackson's interior design reflects its commitment to creating a welcoming, casual atmosphere. The restaurant features wooden dining tables, minimal table decorations, and vintage touches like Texaco gas pumps in the lobby.

The walls are adorned with photos of regular customers, creating a sense of community and familiarity. Bloom even allows photos of regulars' pets, like the bulldog that graces the hostess station.

The bar area is a focal point, with beer taps descending from the ceiling and a chalkboard listing the current craft beer offerings. HDTVs and satellite-fed music contribute to the laid-back vibe.

Special Offers and Events

Jackson's has implemented several promotions to attract diners throughout the week:

  • BBQ Nights: Every Monday and Tuesday, guests can enjoy a mixed green salad and a plate of two meats (chef's choice) plus hand-cut fries and coleslaw for $15.95.

  • Prix Fixe Menu: A three-course menu is available for $24.95, offering good value for budget-conscious diners.

  • Happy Hour: The restaurant offers happy hour specials at the bar, including discounted drinks and appetizers.

Community Engagement and Expansion

Jackson's has become deeply ingrained in the Commack community. The restaurant hosts local gatherings and events, such as "Mahjong Mondays," in its back section.

In 2010, Jackson's announced plans to expand its services by adding a catering room and full-service party center. This expansion, dubbed "Parties by Jackson's," was designed to offer both on-site and off-site catering options.

Critical Reception

Jackson's has generally received positive reviews from both critics and customers. Joan Reminick of Newsday described it as "an every-night kind of place," highlighting its accessibility and broad appeal.

Yelp reviewers have praised Jackson's for its consistent food quality, friendly staff, and welcoming atmosphere. Many appreciate the restaurant's ability to cater to different dining preferences, from casual bar snacks to more substantial meals.

However, some reviewers have noted occasional inconsistencies in service and food quality, particularly during busy periods.

Cultural and Social Significance

Jackson's has established itself as more than just a restaurant; it's become a community hub in Commack. By featuring photos of regular customers on its walls and hosting local events, the restaurant has fostered a sense of belonging among its patrons.

The restaurant's evolution from a seafood-focused establishment (Blue Oyster Grille) to a more broadly appealing American eatery reflects changing dining trends and local preferences. Jackson's ability to adapt while maintaining its core identity has been key to its longevity.

Jackson's Restaurant has successfully carved out a niche in Commack's dining scene by offering a diverse menu of American favorites in a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere. From its creative cocktails to its community-focused approach, Jackson's continues to be a popular choice for locals and visitors alike.

As the restaurant industry faces ongoing challenges, Jackson's adaptability and strong community ties position it well for continued success. Whether you're in the mood for a craft beer and sliders at the bar or a full family dinner in the dining room, Jackson's remains a reliable and beloved option in Commack.
